Symplocarpus foetidus (skunk-cabbage) - From left to right below is the order in which this plant appears during the year. The spathe with the enclosed spadix of flowers is sometimes seen sticking up through the snow. While the spathe is withering, the leaves are emerging. Finally only the leaves are present.
