   Taxonomy: Worldwide there are 65 genera and approximately 2200 species in the Campanulaceae.
   Habit: Plants of the Campanulaceae on Mount Desert Island are herbs.
   Leaf type: simple.
   Flowers: bisexual, with 5 sepals, 5 petals, 5 stamens, and 1 pistil; ovary inferior with axile placentation.
   Fruit: capsule.
