Science in Action
For over 20 years, MNHO has put researchers out in the field to monitor Maine’s flora and fauna. This provides conservationists, natural resource management agencies, and scientists with the data they need to make decisions about how best to protect Maine plants and animals.
Collaboration
From the Maine Bird Atlas to The Plants of Baxter State Park, MNHO works extensively with state and federal conservation agencies, non-profits, researchers, and scientific institutes to accomplish some of the most ambitious natural history research in Maine.
Preserving Rare Collections
MNHO collaborates with museums and conservation groups to catalog and maintain unique specimen collections containing rare examples of historic flora and fauna.
Education & Outreach
MNHO is instrumental in the creation of numerous field guides to the plants of Maine which are used by amateur and professional botanists to better understand and appreciate Maine’s diverse flora.
Enhanced Understanding
From plants to birds to seaweeds, MNHO works to observe and record Maine’s biodiversity and interpret those findings in the context of global species population trends and climate change.
