Proceeds from the sale of these prints go directly to surveying Maine owls. Of all Maine birds, owls are among the most difficult to study. Learn more about Maine’s rare owls and the work the Observatory is doing to learn more about them.
The Owls
Top: Long-eared Owl
Long-eared Owls have experienced a decline in the United States since the 1970s, but very little is known about their status in Maine.
Center Left: Boreal Owl
Boreal Owls, as their name suggests, require boreal habitats to breed. Maine has boreal habitats in coastal Washington County and the northern and western mountains, but there has never been a Boreal Owl confirmed to be nesting in Maine.
Center Right: Eastern Screech-Owl
Screech Owls can be heard in southern Maine, but there is very little available data on their nesting success in the state.
Bottom: Northern Saw-whet Owl
Although these tiny owls are present in Maine, there are very few confirmed observations of nesting Saw-whets and no data about their nesting success.
