Constructing kestrel nest boxes | Logan Parker

Over the winter, MNHO staff and Mid-Coast Audubon volunteers worked to assemble and modify more than two dozen kestrel nest boxes to deploy during the 2026 breeding season. Logan Parker has been working with private landowners to establish a network of kestrel nest boxes in Palermo, Maine. This rural, interior Midcoast town has ample open habitat as well as recent evidence of kestrel breeding activity. These boxes will be monitored by MNHO staff over the course of the 2026 breeding season to determine nest box use and breeding outcomes. The project has also deployed a series of nest boxes in additional suitable habitat areas within conservation lands and a handful of privately owned sites throughout coastal portions of the region. The data collected in 2026 will inform future expansions and guide additional volunteer involvement.

MNHO extends sincere thanks to Mid-Coast Audubon for their generous support, which has enabled swift action ahead of the 2026 breeding season. We also thank the many private landowners and conservation property managers that are supporting our work by allowing us to deploy and monitor nest boxes on their properties. Additional updates and materials will be posted on the MDIFW and MNHO project web pages. We look forward to sharing the results of this exciting collaboration as the season progresses.
