Black Guillemot Surveys

Black Guillemot
Black Guillemot | Logan Parker

A member of the Alcid family along with Murres, Auks, and Puffins, Black Guillemots nest in rocky burrows in coastal Maine.

About this project

Although anecdotal evidence suggests that Black Guillemot numbers have been declining on the coast of Maine, there has never been a systematic effort to survey Maine’s Black Guillemot colonies.

2026 will be the pilot year for this project, with the MNHO team conducting initial boat surveys in the Midcoast and Downeast regions. These survey results will help inform the research strategy for coming years as the project expands to include more sections of the coast.

Project timeline

  • May – August 2026: Colony surveys focused on Midcoast and Downeast Maine.
  • Winter 2026/2027: Analyze data and plan strategy for 2027 field season.
