Join Glen Mittelhauser for an in-depth look at more than three decades of research on Maine’s wintering Harlequin Duck population and the broader winter seabird community of Jericho Bay.

In the 1990s, Jericho Bay supported what was then the largest wintering concentration of Harlequin Ducks in eastern North America, with counts of more than 500 birds during a single survey day. Recent surveys have documented notable declines in portions of the region, raising important questions about shifting winter distributions.

This webinar provides the historical and ecological context for the March 7th research expedition, outlining how the surveys began, how they have evolved, and what questions the current fieldwork is designed to address.

For those folks participating in the Isle au Haut Winter Seabird Research Expedition the following day, time will be set aside at the end for questions about logistics, expectations, and field methods, an opportunity to ensure participants feel prepared to contribute meaningfully to the research.
